United lifts Carling Cup

CARDIFF: Wayne Rooney scored twice as Manchester United beat Wigan 4-0 on Sunday to post the biggest League Cup final victory in the competition's 45-year history.

After Rooney had given United a halftime lead, Alex Ferguson's team scored three more in six minutes with Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo also hitting the target at the Millennium Stadium.

In its first major final, Wigan was outplayed for the second time this season by United, having lost 4-0 at Old Trafford on Dec. 14 in their only other meeting with Rooney also scoring twice.

Kewell lifts Liverpool

In the Premier League, Harry Kewell scored for Liverpool in a 1-0 defeat of 10-man Manchester City. Liverpool's win pulled it level on points with second-place Manchester United.

Bolton beat Fulham 2-1 with the winning goal from Kevin Nolan. Heidar Helguson had opened the scoring for Fulham only to also net an own goal just before halftime.

Leonardo Pisculichi and Juan Arango scored second-half goals and lowly Mallorca rallied to beat Real Madrid 2-1 and deal a blow to the powerhouse's Spanish league title hopes.

Madrid stayed 10 points behind leader FC Barcelona in third place despite taking a 32nd-minute lead at Mallorca's Son Moix stadium through Sergio Ramos.

Italian Serie A: Ascoli 1 bt Messina 0; Cagliari 2 drew with Chievo Verona 2; Empoli 1 drew with Treviso 1; Inter Milan 3 bt Udinese 1; Juventus 3 bt Lecce 1; Palermo 0 lost to AC Milan 2; Siena 1 bt Sampdoria 0; Lazio lost to AS Roma 2.
