Conspiracy charges filed

SINGAPORE: Top leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines and at least four members of the House of Representatives were among the 51 persons charged in Manila on Monday for an alleged "conspiracy" against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Chief State Prosecutor Jovencito Zuno said those charged would be given the right to file counter-affidavit. The Government took this action amid signs of persistent rumblings within the Marines, an elite military unit, whose commander was among those arrested on February 24 for an alleged coup attempt.
