HYDERABAD: Central Reserve Police Force men will be trained by Greyhounds, a special wing of Andhra Pradesh police, in fighting naxalites. CRPF Inspector-General of Southern Sector C. Balasubramanian said eight selected men of their force will undergo training by the Greyhounds. "Since we're assisting police of Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh in combating naxals, we hope training from Greyhounds will help us plan our operations well," he told a press conference here at CRPF Group Centre at Hakeempet in Ranga Reddy district on Monday.
Training
Greyhounds is a special wing formed by Andhra Pradesh police to combat left wing extremists. Though CRPF men were imparted vigorous training, interaction with Greyhounds would help in better understanding of the local terrain, strategies adopted by naxalites and means to be followed to check them, he added. While the CRPF was already in possession of several modern weapons like AK-47 and Self Loading Rifles, recently Medium Machine Guns (MMG) were also acquired. The co-ordination meeting being held with the officials of State intelligence, Greyhounds and other wings of police was of immense use in evolving new plans to check the naxal operations. To assist the men in field level, CRPF higher-ups had mooted the idea of forming an exclusive intelligence gathering wing. "There would be some 1,000-odd members in this unit. They would spread across the country and give us vital feedback," Mr. Balasubramanian said.
Medals presented
The IGP gave away medals of meritorious service to 25 men and officers, including the Deputy IGPs of Bangalore and Pallipuram ranges R. Tarar and P.G.G. Nair respectively, for the year 2005. While the 18th battalion won medal for better administration, the 140th battalion was adjudged as the best cost-effective unit. The 83rd battalion won award in operations category. CRPF Ranga Reddy Group Centre DIG Gautam Sawang and other officials were present.
