MCC issues notice on property tax

Special Correspondent

The tax is one of the major sources of revenue

  • Resources generated through property tax have helped undertake works, says Commissioner
  • Unauthorised structures to be levied twice the tax amount

MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation has circulated a notice to property owners in the city urging them to remit their property tax and help the corporation undertake development works.

The notice draws the attention of property owners to the need to generate resources for improving infrastructure, and underlines the fact that property tax is one of the major sources of revenue for the corporation.

Commissioner of the corporation A.B. Ibrahim has said that the corporation is way ahead of other corporations in the State in collecting property tax from owners, all of which, he claimed, has resulted in providing better civic amenities to the public.

Development of parks, beautification of the city, installation of streetlights and maintenance and improvement of the underground drainage system are some of the major works undertaken by the corporation.

He said the resources generated through property tax have played an important role in enabling such development works.

Mr. Ibrahim also drew attention to the relevant clause under the Karnataka Municipal Council Act and said that unauthorised structures will be levied twice the actual tax.

The Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has called for superseding the corporation for demanding immediate payment of property tax and threatening force if the tax is not paid.

In a release, P.M. Bhat of the MGP said that corporation officials are demanding that the citizens pay the same tax they paid last year (2004-5) and are levying a late payment penalty of 2 per cent a month from June 2005.

As a result, if the tax is paid now, it will attract a fine of 14 per cent.

The parishat said this is a "flagrant violation" of the law, considering that sections concerning property tax have been amended with effect from April 1, 2005.
