THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will not exert pressure on the United Democratic Front (UDF) to induct the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC-K) into the front, IUML State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty has said.

He was speaking at a function organised by the party to mark the conclusion of the three-day district-level convention here on Monday.

"We will discuss the DIC(K) issue collectively with all the constituent members of the UDF," he said.

Mr. Kunhalikutty described the UDF Government's decision to implement the Narendran Commission report as a revolutionary step for the Backward Castes in the State. "It was not Pinarayi Vijayan's Kerala March, but Oommen Chandy's decision to implement the Narendran Commission report that has made an impact on society. For the past 48 years, nobody had dared to touch this issue. Even now the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is yet to explain the party's stand on the report," he said.

He said that one of the significant aspects of the report was that it called for `direct recruitment from the backward sections while making appointments.' "The impact the report had on society will be reflected in the forthcoming Assembly elections," he said.

Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, president, Muslim Youth League, who inaugurated the convention, said the Narendran Commission report had been welcomed by all sections of people. "The fact that there was no opposition or protest to the report proves that it has been welcomed by all," he said.

The convention was attended by senior leaders of the IUML, including Minister for Local-Self Government K. Kutty Ahmed Kutty and district president Manvila Sainudeen.
