CHENNAI: The Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran released a commemorative stamp here to mark the centenary year of the Don Bosco Salesians in India on Monday. A.M. Chinnappa, Salesians of Don Bosco Archbishop, Madras-Mylapore, received the first stamp at an event attended by children from several Don Bosco institutions. Don Bosco, an Italian priest who established a congregation in 1859, is the inspiration of the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and a similar order for women called `Daughters of Mary Help of Christians'. They run several educational institutions, training centres and homes for the underprivileged. Don Bosco Salesians entered India in 1906, first setting up base in Thanjavur. The stamp release, marking the centenary year of their presence in the country, was a historic day for the Salesians of Don Bosco, said K.M. Jose, vice provincial, Chennai Province. Amalraj Susai, President of Don Bosco Institutions, Tiruchi, called on Salesians to shift their focus to villages. Stanislaus Swamikannu, President, Don Bosco Institutions (Chennai Region), Mary Ann Fernando, President, Salesian Sisters (Tamil Nadu) and Parithi Ellamvazhuthi, MLA, Egmore, offered felicitations. Mr. Maran announced that he would soon be releasing a stamp commemorating 300 years of the Protestant Church in India.
