His abstract art works are a treat for the eye

FIGURATIVE PAINTER: S. Pranam Singh

A two-week-long exhibition, "Abstract Expressions" by S. Pranam Singh, an acclaimed portraiture and fine figurative painter, opened at Gallery Freedom in the Qutub Institutional Area here on Tuesday.

The exhibition features the latest abstract art works of Pranam.

For the show, the artist -- born in the North-Eastern State of Manipur -- has not drawn inspiration from the picturesque beauty of Imphal but instead highlighted the cultural activities and hosting of special festivals at the pilgrimage town of Varanasi.

"I left Manipur 30 years ago. Varanasi, where I am presently staying, has given me plenty of inspiration to portray its various facets.

The exhibition features abstract works done by me last year," says Pranam. Having lived in Varanasi for so many years, the artist has portrayed scenes from the ghats of Varanasi many times.

Pranam has a special connection with Kolkata, the City of Joy where he studied painting at the Government College of Art and Crafts. Pranam has been honoured with a Senior Fellowship in Painting by the Department of Culture and also by the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata.

Over the years, his solo exhibitions have been put up at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, Chinese Academy of Arts in China and Gallery Ganga-Tat in Varanasi, while his group shows have been displayed at Art Shoppe in Dubai and at cosmopolitan cities across the country.

Gallery Freedom was set up by the Voluntary Health Association of India to promote the cause of art and artists and generate resources for social causes. The gallery promotes visual art as well as academic and experimental works. -- Madhur Tankha
