Chicken prices are yet to pick up from Rs.25 a kg though it is showing signs of improvement, says A.A. Rafiq, president of the Poultry Farmers and Traders Association. Prices will firm up only when hotel industry starts buying, he adds. Among the general public, the bird flu scare has somewhat subsided because of reassuring news stories about safe chicken elsewhere in the world. No bird flu deaths have been reported so far in the State. Though people have been assured that chicken meat when cooked over 70 degrees centigrade is safe for consumption, most of them have stopped dropped chicken dishes from their menu for fear of their friends and relatives. The poultry farmers association has arranged a series of meetings to step up their campaign for consuming chicken meat. A chicken mela is being planned soon, says Mr. Rafiq.
