Mangalavanam beckons students, greens

Mangalavanam bird sanctuary is bracing to receive some new visitors. It is not the annual hoard of avian visitors. Instead, it is for children from various schools and green enthusiasts that the sanctuary is all being spruced up.

The children are in for a rare treat at the sanctuary. The Forest Department is soon to open a documentation-cum-information centre of birds and mangroves at Mangalavanam.

There will be no big construction activities inside the park. One of the rear rooms of the building inside the park was recently damaged as an uprooted tree fell over it. While renovating the room, the department plans to develop the terrace of the existing building into the information centre.

Information about the wildlife sanctuaries and related areas will be available at the centre. A reference library will also be set up in future. "We plan to operate the centre and allow visitors without disturbing the tranquillity of the sanctuary," says V. Gopinath, Chief Wildlife Warden of the State.

The information centre can be used for nature camps and study classes. Forest clubs can also make use of the facility. The details of the bird varieties that visit the sanctuary and the mangroves that grow in the sanctuary will be displayed at the centre. Children will be taken to the space at the backyard of the office building for bird-watching and that too without disturbing the birds that reach the park, says Mr. Gopinath. It would be certainly a trip worth its money for the school children to learn and experience nature.
