Welcome ruling

The Madras High Court ruling striking down the Tamil Nadu Government's admission policy for professional courses and directing it to hold a Common Entrance Test is welcome. The Tamil Nadu Regulation of Admission in Professional Courses Act, which abolished CET for State Board students alone, was flawed. The evaluation system of plus-two examinations is quite unreliable. It is like a weighing machine that shows different readings every time one steps on it. Thousands of students apply for re-totalling and revaluation every year. The CET, on the other hand, is highly reliable.

C. Manoharan Dairiam,
Chennai

The State's contention that rural students' welfare should be taken care of is valid. But the elimination of CET is not the solution to it. They should be adequately trained through special coaching classes to improve their standard. The Government should avoid appealing the case in the interest of the student community.
