`WELL BABY' SHOW: Calves on display at the cattle exhibition at Gudihatnoor in Adilabad district on Tuesday.
GUDIHATNOOR (ADILABAD DT.): A calf rally at Gudihatnoor on Tuesday could as well have been termed `well (cattle) baby show' because the participants were ultra healthy. Farmer-owners of the `special' hybrid variety of buffaloes, cows and sheep from Gudihatnoor, Indervelli, Ichoda and Bazarhatnoor put on display at the exhibition. The speciality of these animals (some of them were even second generation) being born as a result of a cross between a local milch animal with another of a high milk-yielding breed. All of them were born due to artificial insemination which was undertaken by the Gopala mitras, veterinarians and para veterinarians. "This show will serve the purpose of encouraging farmers to take to artificial insemination. This will improve the germ plasm of local varieties which will result in more milk per animal", revealed the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, N. Venkat Swamy.
Breeds of display
The varieties on display were the progeny of a Murra and local buffalo and the Nagpuri breed. There were also the offsprings of a local and a jersey cow. There was the young one of a mighty Nellore ram too. "We are giving incentives to new farmers to take up artificial insemination. This will go a long way in not only creating awareness on improvement of local breed of milch animals but also improve the economy of local farmers," the Joint Director said. The exhibition and rally was organised by the Animal Husbandry Department under the Rashtriya Sama Vikas Yojana.
