5.75 lakh candidates will take higher secondary exams

Valuation will go on from March 16 to April 15

CHENNAI: Over 5.75 lakh candidates, including private ones, will appear for the higher secondary school examination from March 2 to 24. The valuation will done from March 16 to April 15. The results will take a month to be declared.

Director of Government Examinations D. Jagannathan told presspersons here on Tuesday that 5,27,105 pupils were from 4,421 schools, 11,013 more than last year. The additional candidates were all girls. As many as 49,690 private candidates will take the examinations this year.

The examinations will be conducted in 1,570 centres. In Chennai, 42,946 pupils from 419 schools will take the examinations in 133 centres.

The examinations will be conducted under the new syllabus. The mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, botany and zoology question papers will have two series of question papers — A and B. The candidates must mention the series on the top of the first page of the main answer sheet, the flyleaf and the additional answer sheet.

As for private candidates, there are two streams. Those who failed in some subjects in the examinations held under the old syllabus will write the examinations under the same syllabus. The examination will be under the new syllabus for those appearing directly without joining any school after passing Standard X. Mr. Jagannathan said instructions were given to all schools to provide adequate furniture for students. District examination committees, led by the Collector, were formed. The Collectors and senior police officers would visit the centres during the examination.

Squad members

In all, there will be more than 3,000 "squad members" to supervise examinations. In some centres, the members will stay till the examinations are over.
