Who is hosting Bush's Purana Qila address?

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Who is hosting American President George W. Bush's address at the historic Purana Qila on March 2 evening? Is it the apex chambers of commerce as announced by Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran on Tuesday or is it somebody else?

If Mr. Saran believes that the Indian Chambers of Commerce is organising the show, the U.S. Embassy thinks otherwise. Already, U.S. Ambassador David Mulford has sent out invitations for the Purana Qila event in his name.

It is known that the Americans insisted on having the Bush event at Purana Qila despite Indian security personnel having rejected the venue from the safety angle.

Later, when the Americans persisted, the Government at the highest level cleared the venue.

When contacted, an official in the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) seemed to know little about their role in "organising" the event.

So what's happening here? Has the Government of India outsourced Mr. Bush's sole "public" event to the American Embassy?
