Attack on woman leader: CPI(M) refutes charge

Staff Reporter

Says it was the outcome of group rivalry in Congress

ALAPPUZHA: The alleged attack on Mahila Congress State president Shanimol Usman at the Alappuzha Medical College on February has raked up a controversy with the Congress accusing the CPI(M) of involvement in the attack. CPI (M) Alappuzha district secretary G. Sudhakaran has refuted the allegation.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala and DCC president C.R. Jayaprakash had alleged that the CPI(M) was behind the attack.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Sudhakaran dismissed the charges against the CPI(M) and said that those who had been arrested in connection with the incident were known Congress workers. He alleged that the attack on Ms. Shanimol was the outcome of group rivalry in the Congress.

Mr. Sudhakaran said the allegation raised by Congress leaders was part of a strategy chalked out by the party to portray the CPI(M) as an "anti-women party." He said while the CPI(M) had ousted all party workers who were involved in the attack on Leela Abhilash, a woman councillor of Mavelikara municipality, the Congress had protected its workers who were involved in the conspiracy behind the attack on Ms. Leela.

Mr. Sudhakaran demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the attack on Ms. Shanimol to bring out the truth.

Mr. Sudhakaran refuted reports that the CPI(M) Alappuzha district committee was ridden with factionalism. Such reports were baseless and aimed at destroying the party, he said.
