The results: Hockey (final): Adhiyaman bt VLBJ, Coimbatore 6-4 (via tie breaker, full time 2-2.) Big win for Goa
Tamil Nadu defeated Goa by 155 runs in a South Zone veterans' cricket tournament in Bangalore on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu scored 232 for eight in 35 overs and later bundled out Goa for 77. In another match, Karnataka defeated Kerala by 36 runs. The scores: TN 232 for 8 in 35 overs (Venkatasubramaniam 53, S. Satish Kumar 46, R. Venkatesh 40) bt Goa 77 in 23.2 overs. Karnataka 178 for 9 in 35 overs (P.V. Shashikanth 63, Sudeesh four for 25) bt Kerala 142 in 31.4 overs.
Railway men win title
Chennai teams Southern Railway and SRM Rising Star (SRMRS) won the men's and women's title in the State-level basketball tournament for the J.J. Trophy here on Sunday. The results (final): Men (final): S. Rly. (Chennai) 55 (Saravana Rajan 23) bt BSNL (Chennai) 53 (Sivarajan 15). Women (final): SRM Rising Star (Chennai) 53 (S. Divya 15) bt All Star BBC (Chennai) 40 (Pappu 17).
Sundararajan shines
K. Sundararajan (four for 38 and 51 runs) helped Dindigul defeat Tuticorin by six wickets in the TNCA- SS. Rajan trophy seminar inter-district cricket tournament in Dindigul on Tuesday. The scores: Tuticorin 143 in 41.2 overs (M. Edwin 52, K. Sundararajan four for 38) lost to Dinidigul 144 for four in 25.3 overs (K. Sundararajan 51).
Kalyanaraman triumphs
V. Kalyanaraman of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation won the men's singles title in the district-level open table tennis tournament conducted jointly by MDTTA and SDAT-Ellis Table Tennis Coaching Academy in Madurai on Sunday. The results: Men's singles (final): V. Kalyanaraman bt R. Chandrasekar (BSNL) 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9. Men's doubles: (final): Mukundh/Riaz bt V. Kalyanaraman/R. Shivaji in final
Shivaji got the better of Pune 9-5 and entered the final of the all-India inter-university kho-kho tournament for men in Salem on Tuesday. In the clash for the title, the winner will lock horns with Mumbai, which defeated Mysore 18-6. The results (Semifinal): Shivaji bt Pune 9-5; Mumbai bt Mysore 18-6.
TNEB in title round
TNEB and Tuticorin Port Trust will clash for the title in the TNEB Trophy basketball tournament. They posted their second successive wins in the semifinal league in Tuticorin on Monday. The results (league): TNEB 81 (Ravichandran 24, Vincent Sahayaraj 20) bt Armed Police, Chennai 80 (Barathi 25, Ramachandran 21); Port Trust 70 (Selvakumar 16, Murugaraj 14, Senthil 12) bt S. Rly Coop. Society, Chennai 43 (Pechimuthu 12, Bose 10).
Arun clocks fastest time
Bangalore's Arun Renuka Jaidev clocked the fastest timing of 10.47s in his Suzuki GXX - R1000 in the Open category of the Bharat Petroleum Sponsored quarter mile Speed Run 2006 at Kharghar here on Sunday. The Bangalore boys took away all the prizes in the Indian Open foreign bikes class.
Vikas crosses 19m mark
Vikas Gowda recorded a mark of 19.25 metres in shot put while finishing second in the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor collegiate meet at Blacksburg, Virgina, U.S., last Saturday, according to information received here. The Karnataka-born Vikas, better known for his discus prowess, had gone all out to cross 20 metres and fouled his last four attempts, according to a message received from his father, Shive Gowda, on Monday. Vikas is still shy of the shot put qualifying mark for the Commonwealth Games (19.91m), but his 19.25m is the best by an Indian this season. He is scheduled to compete in the NCAA indoor championships on March 11 before proceeding for the Commonwealth Games in which the athletics events begin on March 19.
