Resolution on reservation for minorities tabled

Resolution adopted unanimously at final Assembly session

Pondicherry: Pondicherry Assembly, which adjourned sine die on Monday, adopted an interim budget of Rs. 1213.33 crore for April to September 2006.

The session was held for three days from February 23 (exclusive of Saturday and Sunday, the two intercepting holidays). The Assembly also unanimously adopted a resolution, tabled by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on the closing day of the session, urging the Central Government to introduce 13 per cent reservation for minorities in admission to educational institutions and employment. in the Union Territory. The resolution stated that, according to the 2001 census, Muslims and Christians constituted 13.22 per cent of the population of of Pondicherry. Of all the speeches made on the floor of the House the one by Speaker was most impressive.
