Pondicherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told the Assembly that the Common Entrance Examination conducted by the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) would be basis for admission to professional courses. He was replying to the views expressed by members on the motion of thanks to the Lt. Governor's Address. He was replying to repeated requests from members that the Government stand on the issue be made clear. Mr. Rangasamy said Government had initiated steps to form a Secondary Education and Higher Secondary Education Board to cover all schools with a common curriculum in the Union Territory. Till the Board started holding pubic examinations, the present system of holding the centralised admission test for admission to professional courses would continue. (Presently schools in Pondicherry and Karaikal adopt the curriculum of Tamilnadu State Boards, and institutions in Mahe and Yanam the curriculum of the Boards of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh). Mr. Rangasamy also announced that the ceiling on the annual income ceiling of parents whose children were admitted to the professional courses would be raised to Rs. 5 lakhs from Rs. 3 lakhs so that more students would get scholarship 60 per cent of the total fees levied by professional institutions here.
