`Duty on software will increase piracy'

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Union Government's proposal to levy eight per cent excise duty on packaged software will affect efforts to increase use of information technology (IT) and give scope for piracy, according to representatives of the industry.

"On the information technology front, the budget is neutral. However, the proposed eight per cent excise duty on over-the-counter packaged software impedes IT penetration to a vast majority of the masses," Nandan M. Nilekani, President, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Infosys Technologies, said.
