TIRUPATI: District Collector S.S. Rawat has said that steps will be initiated to bring about awareness of 108 service to effectively tackle emergencies. At a meeting to review the performance of the service on Tuesday along with the district police and representatives of Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), which introduced the facility, he said a large-scale campaign with hoardings, posters and film slides would be taken up to popularise the scheme. He also lauded EMRI for making available a state-of-the-art ambulance for accident victims. Superintendent of Police V.V. Gopalakrishna promised to direct his staff to act in coordination with the EMRI team. Listing out the benefits to the common man since the inception of the scheme last August, EMRI vice-president S.S. Sriram said 675 medical emergency calls had been received and acted upon, due to which 91 lives had been saved. He said the service would be extended to Nizamabad, Bhimavaram and Amalapuram by March 1 and Nellore and Kadapa by month-end. SVRRGG hospital superintendent Abdul Salam, RMO Tarachand, civic health officer Bhishmaiah Naidu and SVIMS medical superintendent Raghuram took part.
