Protests by TRS, TDP members force Speaker to resort to the act

  • TRS demands debate on Krishna water for Telangana
  • TDP wants compensation for farmers
  • Members rush to Speaker's podium

HYDERABAD : Protests by members belonging to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the Telugu Desam Party on various issues forced Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy to adjourn the Assembly as many as three times on Tuesday.

TRS members were demanding a discussion on allocation of Krishna water for irrigation projects in Telangana while those of the TDP were registering their resentment over non-payment of compensation to farmers whose crops were damaged due to floods.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, Opposition parties tabled six adjournment notices, all of which were disallowed by the Speaker. TRS members, led G. Vijayarama Rao, were on their feet demanding discussion on Krishna waters. The Speaker offered to convene another meeting of the Business Advisory Committee to list discussion on irrigation projects. Not satisfied, TRS members rushed to the podium displaying placards and continued the protest leading to adjournment for 10 minutes.

Later, when the Question Hour was taken up, P. Keshav (TDP) said the compensation to farmers, who lost their crops due to floods last year, was yet to be paid. They included farmers of Anantapur who lost crops worth Rs. 112 crores.

TDP members raised slogans and rushed to the well of the House demanding compensation forcing the Speaker to announce a tea break for 10 minutes.

A third adjournment followed as the TDP members refused to budge from the podium.
