Basith appointed Home Secretary

HYDERABAD : M.A. Basith, Director-General of Police, Prison and Correctional Services, is the new Principal Secretary, Home Affairs.

His posting was announced by the General Administration Department on Tuesday after A. K. Srivastava, demitted office on attaining the age of superannuation, according to an official release. - Special Correspondent

Tummala injured in accident

KHAMMAM: Telugu Desam Khammam district chief and former Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao

was injured in a road accident near Khammam on Tuesday evening. The accident occurred as his car lost control and hit a culvert. He was admitted to a local hospital.-Staff Reporter

Roundtable held on Girglani report

HYDERABAD : A roundtable conference organised by Telangana Regional Teachers' Union and Telangana Municipal Employees' Association here on Tuesday demanded time-bound steps to implement the Girglani Commission recommendations. It sought stringent action against those IAS officers who violated the Presidential Orders.

The roundtable was conducted to review the Cabinet decision on the Girglani report and to decide on the course of action to secure orders on the implementation of the report. - Special Correspondent

Fatal fall

NIZAMABAD : A farmer, Manda Devaiah, 30, of Pedda Mallareddy village in Biknoor mandal died after falling from a moving tractor at Mutyampet village in Domakonda mandal on Monday night. He was transporting sugarcane to Gayatri Sugars Limited at Kamareddy when the accident occurred.

His friend Nagaraju was driving the tractor. - Staff Reporter

Jayaraj is new CEO for NFC

HYDERABAD : R.N. Jayaraj, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Nuclear Fuel Fabrication), has taken over as CEO of Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) in place of R. Kalidas, who retired on attaining superannuation.

He was transferred to NFC in 1978 and played a pioneering role in making nuclear fuel for the first 540-mw reactor at Tarapur, the first of its kind in the country that was commissioned recently. - Special Correspondent

Old-age pension to be increased

Hyderabad : The State Government is all set to increase the old-age pension to Rs.200 a month following the announcement by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram of a similar amount in the Union Budget on Tuesday.

The Government at present is giving 21 lakh pensions. The State Government is planning to increase the pension net to cover 30 lakh beneficiaries, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said on Tuesday while indicating that there could be a matching hike in the pension amount here. - Special Correspondent

14 bus passengers hurt in accident

Rajahmundry : Fourteen RTC bus passengers were injured when the vehicle hit a roadside tree in Atreyapuram mandal on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Two motorcyclists die in mishap

KADAPA: Two motorcyclists died when the two-wheelers they were riding collided head-on on Rayachoti-Madanapalle road on Tuesday. An unidentified man of Cherlopalle in Gurramkonda mandal died instantly while, Ramamohana Reddy, supervisor in MAA, an NGO at Madanapalle, succumbed to injuries on way to Rayachoti Government hospital. Reddy belonged to Bodireddigaripalle village of Chinnamandem mandal.

Five thatched houses gutted

KADAPA: Five thatched houses were destroyed in a fire mishap caused by electrical short circuit in Yandapalle village in Rayachoti mandal on Monday night. Houses of Nageswar, Paleti, Venkataramana, B. Jayaram and Reddaiah were gutted. Additional Mandal Revenue Inspector Sudarshan and Village Secretary Venkatarami Reddy inspected the damage. — Staff Reporter

Blood donation camp held

KURNOOL: Five hundred students of St. Johns College of Engineering and Technology, Yemmiganur, donated blood at a mega blood donation camp, jointly sponsored by the college and the Indian Red Cross Society on Tuesday. College Principal B. Stephen Charles, District Secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society K.G. Govinda Reddy, District Coordinator of Youth Red Cross M. R. C. Mohan Rao, D. Narasimhachar and others were present.

Two schoolgirls missing

KURNOOL: Two girls of eighth standard were missing from Balasadan girls hostel at Pathikonda in Kurnool district. According to reports, Laxmi of Gupparalla in Tuggali and Nagamma of Chandoli in Pathikonda, were missing since Saturday. The parents of the girls were informed of the incident on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter
