CPI to hold demonstrations against visit of Bush

UPA Government accepting policies `dictated' by the US, says party leader

ONGOLE: The CPI will protest against the visit of US President George Bush in India by organising demonstrations in all districts on March 2 and at Hyderabad on March 4 defying prohibitory orders, if any, imposed by the Government.

Speaking to newspersons here on Tuesday, CPI State secretariat member T. Lakshminarayana criticised the UPA Government for buckling under pressure and accepting the policies "dictated" by the US.

Polavaram project

The US had forced India to vote against Iran twice, he said. It had successfully stalled the gas pipeline from Iran and joint investment by India and China in Syria.

He said the UPA Government was moving away from the non-alignment policy and compromising on its economic sovereignty. The US was trying to gain control over our nuclear programme.

He asked the State Government to construct the Polavaram project without reducing its height and capacity as demanded by some political parties. He however wanted the Government to offer best package for rehabilitation of the evacuees, particularly those belonging to Scheduled Tribes. He stressed the need to impound maximum water at Polavaram and also interlink the Godavari and the Krishna to make optimum use of available waters in the State.

He accused the Telugu Desam Party for inciting regional passions on Polavaram. He asked the Government to construct the Velugonda project with one tunnel of 11.35 meter diameter as originally envisaged to impound 43 tmc ft of water and irrigate 4.25 lakh acres. But the Government had reduced the tunnel size to 7.5 meters and promised to dig another tunnel of 9.5-meter diameter later.
