`Panel member did not give note of dissent'

Thrissur: Minister for Water Resources Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said that the Supreme Court has allowed raising the water level in Mullaperiyar dam from 136 feet to 142 feet because the report of a seven-member technical committee to study the safety of the dam did not contain a note of dissent from Kerala's representative, M.K. Parameswaran Nair.

The Minister told reporters here on Tuesday that Mr. Parameswaran Nair did not write against raising the level. "Mr. Nair claims that he had spoken about Kerala's concerns at meetings. But this was not enough.

The other members of the technical committee supported raising the level and the Supreme Court got the impression that the view was unanimous." — Staff Reporter

BJP calls for hartal on March 2

KOCHI: The BJP has called for a hartal in the State on March 2 in protest against the treatment meted out to the State in the Union Budget. Accusing the Centre of having neglected the State, BJP State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said it did not contain any proposal for new projects or institutions to be set up in the State.

Out of the seven highways announced in the Budget, there was none for Kerala. In the Railway Budget, the allocation for the State was reduced when compared with last year. Mr. Pillai termed the attitude of the Centre as a ``challenge to the people of the State.'' He called upon the people to make the `dawn to dusk' hartal a success. — Staff Reporter
