`Failure to furnish previous address poses a problem'

Special Correspondent

Claims for inclusion in rolls will not be accepted without verifying the previous address, says Naresh Gupta

CHENNAI: Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Naresh Gupta on Tuesday said that one of the problems faced in the verification of the applications for inclusion of names in the electoral rolls was failure to furnish the previous address of the applicants.

The Election Commission had decided that the final publication of electoral rolls in the current process of revision with January 1 as the qualifying date would be on March 7.

He told reporters here that the field verification staff had been instructed to obtain the previous address so as to enable them to delete the names of electors in the previous place of registration.

Mr. Gupta made it clear that the claims would not be accepted straightaway without verifying the previous address. On the Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) programme, he said the agencies concerned had been gradually stepping up the mobilisation of equipment.
