ANANTAPUR: Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Jain suspended a head constable and four constables belonging to different police stations in the district on Tuesday following charges of extortion from scrap merchants. The suspended policemen are: Head constable Sadiq Vali of Obuladevara Cheruvu police station and constables Masood Vali of Guntakal rural PS, Srinivasulu of Hindupur Two Town PS, Mohammed of Pedda Pappur PS and Narayana of Uravakonda PS. The Anantapur Scrap Merchants' Association on Monday alleged that a few police personnel led by Sadiq Vali had been fleecing scrap merchants accusing them of trading in stolen scrap. President and honourary president of the association Shaikshah Vali and Ramanjaneyulu stated that the police had forcibly collected Rs. 5 lakhs from half-a-dozen scrap merchants during that last two months by blackmailing them. Complaints to higher authorities also had no impact, they alleged. The policemen had allegedly extorted Rs. 1.3 lakhs from Ramanjaneyulu, Rs. 80,000 from Veeranjaneyulu, Rs. 30,000 from Fakruddin and another Rs. 2 lakhs from three more merchants.
