HYDERABAD: Tamil Nadu on Tuesday began supplying power to Andhra Pradesh to help tide over power shortage. With Tamil Nadu also having it own problems, the supply has been restricted to 300 MW, working out to 7 million units per day. It is routed through the Power Trading Corporation (PTC), a Government of India undertaking, as States prefer purchases through PTC for an objective metering of the power supplied. APTransco is purchasing power from Tamil Nadu at Rs 3.15 per unit. Power has also been offered from Kayankulam plant, which is run on naptha, but APTrasnco ruled out the offer due to the high price tag of Rs. 6 per unit. Meanwhile, the APTransco has found that the four distribution companies are not complying with its orders to restrict the specified loads during this difficult period. They have been found indulging in overdrawals to satisfy HT and other users beyond their eligibility and placing additional load on the transmission lines. To overcome the difficulty, the APTransco has proposed to the Government to take over the task of power distribution to consumers directly. It was because of this overload that the frequency of the State's grid nose-dived to 47 cycles per second recently, threatening to trip the supply all over the South. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala lodged a complained against Andhra Pradesh for overloading the lines, with the Southern Load Despatch Centre, Bangalore.
