15,000 Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam activists held

CHENNAI : About 15,000 people were arrested in various parts of the State on Tuesday when they attempted to stage a demonstration under the auspices of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TNMMK).

They were demanding immediate release on bail of over 250 Muslim undertrials in various prisons in Tamil Nadu for more than eight years.

In Chennai, where the agitation was led by Kazhagam president M.H. Jawahirullah, about 2,200 persons were arrested and released later, the police said.

A TNMMK press release said more than one lakh men and women participated in the "fill the jail" agitation and courted arrest in Chennai, Vellore, Salem, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Palayamkottai and Nagapattinam.

The Kazhagam demanded that besides releasing the undertrials, the State Government should rehabilitate their family members.

The prisoners had been booked in various cases, including the Coimbatore bomb blast case. They had been denied bail. Of the 167 persons arrested in the Coimbatore bomb blast case, one died in prison. The trial in the case was almost over. In some of the other cases, trial had not commenced yet, the release said.
