Acquittal of MLA: Government to move HC

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The Government has decided to appeal in the High Court against the acquittal of the lone Telugu Desam Party MLA from Guntur district, Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar, in a murder case related to the 1996 Lok Sabha elections.

He was an accused along with his brother Ravi in a case related to the murder of a Congress worker while polling was in progress in Ponnuru constituency. The VII Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court), D. Appa Rao, acquitted Narendra on April 2, 2004, three days prior to the filing of nomination for the Assembly elections.

The III Additional Sessions Judge, NVS Talpasai, dismissed the withdrawal petition in the case filed by prosecution in 2000 and ordered continuation of the trial, in which lawyer Peddi Venkateswara Rao defended the case.

There was commotion in a polling station in Ponnuru constituency and the Congress alleged rigging. TDP workers allegedly kidnapped Yelavarthi Nageswara Rao along with another person and hit them leading to the death of one person in hospital. It was alleged that the Telugu Desam MLA was present in the car in which the deceased was kidnapped. One of the accused Ravi died later.
