Magazine copies seized
SRINAGAR:
Police used batons and fired tear gas shells on Tuesday as protesters in several areas of the city damaged vehicles and enforced a shutdown against a photograph of the holy Kaaba in Mecca on playing cards published in a leading news weekly.
Copies of the issue of India Today have been seized from newspaper agents and a case registered against the weekly at the Maisuma police station.
Protesters in several areas pelted passing vehicles with stones while shopkeepers downed shutters in the business hub of the city including Maisuma, Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Koker Bazaar and Residency Road, officials said.
Bus operators decided not to ply on many routes as the snap strike spread to other areas.
