`Avoid learning by rote'

Ramachandra Gowda tells students to understand and study

BANGALORE: "Who can explain Newton's third law," asked Ramachandra Gowda, Minister for Science and Technology, as he walked towards a group of students assembled for a National Science Day event.

When the students answered in a chorus, he said the answer illustrated the principle which stated that a small force is required to elicit a response. Mr. Gowda stressed that principles of science need to be explained to students. Learning by rote should be avoided. He made this suggestion after asking students the question "what is 4-2/2". When some students replied "one" (the correct answer is "three"), he told them that they need to understand and study and then explained to them "BODMAS (Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction)".

The Minister said science need to be taken in greater measure to rural areas and Kannada-medium schools. This will improve the life of people, he said at the event organised by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology.

M.R. Soorappan, Director of the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, spoke.
