Radiotherapy unit inaugurated

KOCHI: The much-awaited radiotherapy unit at the General Hospital here was inaugurated on Tuesday by V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, Minister for Industries. This will make available radiation therapy to cancer patients who had to go elsewhere for the treatment. A landscaping project was inaugurated by Dominic Presentation, Minister for Fisheries and Sports. — Staff Reporter

Power supply disruption

KOCHI : Power supply to Convent Road, Lal Salam Road, Sahakarana Road, Paradise Road and Nilamuri Narayanasan Road will be disrupted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday due to line-maintenance work, the Vytilla office of the KSEB has informed. — Staff Reporter

Dharna begins

KOCHI : Families of employees working with Hindalco organised a 48-hour dharna in front of the company, demanding reopening of the smelter unit at Alupuram. CPM leader S. Sarma inaugurated the dharna on Monday. The Save Hindalco Trade Union Samity said that the management was adopting an `anti-worker attitude' despite there being scope for making profits. — Staff Reporter

Bank staff protest

KOCHI: Bank employees, under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions, staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding action against unidentified persons who attacked the manager of Punjab National Bank, Katrikadavu branch. They demanded that the required number of staff be appointed in banks and adequate security be provided. — Staff Reporter

`Black Day'

KOCHI: The All India Democratic Students' Organisation will observe Wednesday as `Black Day' in protest against the visit of the U.S. President George Bush. In a press release issued here on Tuesday, joint secretary K.P. Salvin said that Mr. Bush was the enemy of peace-loving people. It was sad that Left parties are `supporting' the UPA Government which was `playing to the tune' of the U.S., he said. — Staff Reporter
