TNSTC specials to Veerapur

TIRUCHI : The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Tiruchi, will operate about 100 special buses to Veerapur from various parts of Tiruchi and neighbouring districts in view of the car festival in the village.

The buses would be operated from March 4 to 7. The specials would be operated from Tiruchi, Kulithalalai, Karur, Musiri, Thogamalai and others places, according to a TNSTC release.

Tax collection drive

The Tiruchi Corporation will conduct an intensive tax collection drive from March 1 to 15, according to a release from Corporation Commissioner Harmander Singh.

All Corporation service centres would function from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays during the period, Mr.Singh said.

Credit camp

Central Bank of India organised a credit camp at its Pettaivaithalai branch near here recently. The bank's Deputy General Manager, Zonal Office, Chennai, Gopalakrishnan Nair, disbursed loans to the tune of Rs. 6.07 crore to 166 beneficiaries sponsored by the bank's Tiruchi Main, Cantonment, Srirangam, Karur and Pettaivaithalai branches.

The loans were disbursed under various sectors including agriculture, self-employment, small-scale, self-help groups and other non-farm sectors.

A release from the bank said that customers of the Pettavaithalai branch participated in the programme and appreciated the excellent service rendered by the bank in all spheres.

Fined for stray pigs

The Judicial Magistrate Court II, IV and VI here have imposed a fine of Rs. 740 each on seven pig stay owners for allowing the animals to stray onto public places. The court said they would be imprisoned if they failed to pay fine.

A release from the Corporation said the Corporation, through its counsel, filed 25 cases against seven persons in the Judicial Magistrate Courts II, IV and VI for having reared pigs in Corporation limits without obtaining licence and allowing the animals to stray onto public places against rules.

Pirated CDs seized

The Fort police seized 900 pirated compact discs of latest Tamil films and pornographic movies here on Monday night. The CDs were seized from a cement godown in Singarathope.

The police arrested Basheer Ahmed (31) of Tennur. The accused, according to the police, was running a cell phone shop at Burma Bazaar. Basheer was later remanded.

Free eye camp

A total number of 231 persons were screened at a free eye camp conducted jointly by Joseph Eye Hospital, Worth Trust and the Society for Help and Rehabilitation of Needy at Manikandam near here recently.

All patients were given free medicine and eye-drops. The camp was inaugurated by T.V. Saraswathy, a retired Professor, a release issued here said.

Mettur level

The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.36 feet today. The inflow was 1331 cusecs and the outflow 1000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.
