Elderly woman `pushed' to death
According to the police, two sisters, Sudarshan Chatrath and Meera Thapar, both residents of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, had come to the Capital to meet their third sister, Geeta Malhotra, on Monday. They told her that they wanted to meet their brother Charanjit Kohli, a resident of Keshavpuram. However, since none of the three sisters were on talking terms with Charanjit owing to some family dispute, they decided to take their younger brother Rakesh along to elder brother's house. Rakesh and his three sisters reached Charanjit's house on Monday afternoon. But Charanjit was not at home. His wife Kiran and her two daughters, Sonika -- a citizen of the United States -- and Tanya, happened to meet the three sisters on the stairs itself. Soon an altercation ensued between them. In a fit of rage, Kiran allegedly asked Sonika to push Ms. Chatrath down the stairs. Sonika reportedly did as told. Ms. Chatrath sustained serious injuries and was taken to Sunder Lal Jain Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday. Keshavpuram police have arrested Kiran and Sonika and are investigating further.
Lawyers arrested
According to the police, Sanjeev and 20 other lawyers were arrested after the Delhi High Court had initiated contempt proceedings against 25 lawyers for "vandalising" the property of the court. They were also prohibited from being seen within a 500-metre radius of the court premises. Meanwhile, New Delhi Bar Association has decided to go ahead with its one-day token strike against the initiation of contempt proceedings against the lawyers.
MCD attaches bank accounts
It attached the bank accounts of G R Kail hospital, New Delhi Public School, DTEA Senior Secondary School, National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development, Harichand Prakashwanti Memorial Trust and two cinema halls. According to MCD sources, New Delhi Public School owes Rs 1 crore in property tax arrears, while DTEA has to pay Rs 93 lakh, Sudarshan Cinema Rs 93 lakh, Harichand Prakashwanti Memorial Trust Rs 20 lakh, G R Kail hospital Rs six lakh, Chandralok Cinema Rs 11 lakh and National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development Rs 16 lakh. The civic body has so far collected Rs 527 crore in property tax arrears as against a target of Rs 1317 crores, a senior official said. With just a month left for the financial year to end, the civic body is now hoping to collect at least Rs 920 crores to surpass its earlier collection record achieved in 2003-04.
