U.N. reforms will benefit all: Dhanapala

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's candidate for the post of U.N. Secretary-General, Jayantha Dhanapala, has said reforms of the global forum would benefit all member-States.

"The reforms of the U.N. will serve not only the U.S., but all 191 members," he said at a function to launch a Web site for his candidature (www.jayanthadhanapala.info) . "U.N. reforms are in everybody's good," he said.

A disarmaments expert, Mr. Dhanapala was the Under-Secretary General for the U.N.'s Department of Disarmament Affairs between 1998 and 2003 and has authored several books on the subject. Mr. Dhanapala, one of Sri Lanka's leading career diplomats with extensive experience in the U.N. system, was unanimously named as the national candidate for the post.
