This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru said in the Lok Sabha that the French Government had indicated they were hoping to take up the matter of de jure transfer of French possessions to India very soon. The Foreign Minister of France is likely to come to Delhi within a fortnight or so. Mr. A.K. Chanda, Deputy External Affairs Minister, replying to a question by Mr. Bibhoothi Mishra and Mr. S.V. Ramaswami and said that a draft treaty of cession was sent to the French Government on behalf of the Government of India in May 1955. The French Government at that time were preoccupied with important internal and external problems. For this reason it had not been possible to carry out further negotiations. India had now been informed by France that there would not be any further delay in this matter. Intervening to answer a supplementary question, the Prime Minister said it was obvious that in this matter the initiative lay with France.
