Paleri takes over as Coast Guard chief

Prabhakaran Paleri

NEW DELHI: Prabhakaran Paleri has taken over as Coast Guard Director- General.

He has been with the maritime force since its formative years, holding the assignments of Deputy-Director General; Regional Commander, Coast Guard Region (West); and Commander, Coast Guard District (Kerala & Lakshadweep) and (West Bengal), besides commanding the first advanced offshore patrol vessel ICGS Samar and the training ship ICGS Varuna.

Recipient of medal

He is the first recipient of the Tatrakshak Medal.

Dr. Paleri joined the Navy in 1969 in the executive branch and served in the Custom Marine Organisation on deputation before joining the Coast Guard in 1981.

A graduate from the National Defence University, Washington, he got a doctorate from the University of Madras for his thesis "Changing Concept of National Security and A Maritime Model for India."

He has also been trained in fisheries technology, narcotics law enforcement and environmental science.

In 2003 he authored a book, `Role of the Coast Guard in Maritime Security of India.'
