Joint operation rescues TV crew
Porbandar:
In the first joint operation of its kind, the Coast Guard and Pakistan's Maritime Safety Agency on Wednesday rescued a Slovakian TV crew and 11 others from an Indian dhow, caught in the high seas for nine days.
The Mumbai-bound dhow had set sail from Sharjah harbour with 11 Indian crew and two Slovakian nationals on February 20. The Slovakian nationals are reporters of a private TV media channel, `Slovak Television JOJ' and were filming a documentary on Indian traditional navigation and the lifestyle of crew on board. However, the ship developed a snag and all-out efforts by the crew to rectify it went in vain.
However, the reporters could manage to get through to their editor in Slovakia over the satellite phone.
The editor in turn got in touch with the Coast Guard and requested for help. But as the ship was found to be in Pakistani waters, about 450 nautical miles off Kandla harbour, the Coast Guard decided to take the help of Pakistani MSA.
