SRINAGAR: Paving the way for his cousin and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to contest the Assembly elections, Mohammad Sharief Niaz resigned from the Bhaderwah constituency from where he was elected in 2002. Mr. Niaz's resignation has been accepted with effect from March 1, Speaker Tara Chand told the Assembly in Jammu on Wednesday.

His resignation has put to rest speculation about Mr. Azad contesting from any of the three vacant seats from Kashmir Valley or seeking a berth in the upper House. It is mandatory for Mr. Azad to be a member of any of the two Houses by the end of April since he took over as Chief Minister on November 2, 2005.

The former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, had chosen to enter the Legislative Council after he took over as Chief Minister in 2002.

But subsequently he contested the election from Pahalgam, which was vacated by his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004.

    Home advantage

Some leaders in the Congress advised Mr. Azad to get elected from Rafiabad constituency in Baramulla district, which fell vacant after the former National Conference leader, Dillawar Mir, resigned to join the People's Democratic Party.

However, Mr Azad seems to have decided to contest from his home constituency.
