VIJAYAWADA: The city police have begun a search for volunteers who will offer their services to guide road users at important traffic junctions. The volunteer should be friendly with vehicle-drivers and pedestrians while on duty in preventing the latter from breaking traffic rules. Some 15 months ago, the department launched `Traffic Mitra,' a scheme that involved people from all walks of life in community traffic policing. It evoked a good response from several quarters. Many students, retired employees and businessmen had expressed their willingness to join the scheme. Some 343 people had registered their names with the four traffic police stations in the city and offered to work for two hours a day. The number, however, had fallen to 167 with the students getting busy with annual examinations and senior citizens expressing their helplessness to work in the heat conditions. During the launch of the scheme, the police sought cooperation from the volunteers to regulate vehicular traffic during peak hours.
