CUDDALORE: State president of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Union, K. Balasubramanian has urged the government to give up the practice of filling up the vacancies "on a contract basis and on consolidated pay, as this militates against the fair play and justice." Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Balasubramanian alleged that instead of abolishing the contract system in all its forms, the government seemed to have justified it by resorting to the same practice, widely prevalent in the spheres of education and health. Moreover, the government had entrusted the recruitment to private agencies that were exploiting the situation to the hilt. He alleged that these agencies were illegally collecting money ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 from the prospective candidates. On appointment, the employees were paid just one-third of the original pay: for instance the office assistants were paid Rs 700 Rs 900 a month (normal pay Rs 2,550); laboratory technicians Rs 1,000 (Rs 3,500) and drivers Rs 2,000-Rs 3,000 (Rs 4,000). TNGEU would highlight the plight of these employees in the conference on "Restoration of rights of government employees and abolition of contract and consolidated payment systems" to be held in Chennai on March 18.
