Announcement on Rajya Sabha polls today

Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission will announce on Thursday elections to 58 vacancies in the Rajya Sabha.

The Election Commission's counsel, S. Muralidhar, said this during the hearing of a writ petition filed in the Supreme Court by former Rajya Sabha member and senior journalist Kuldip Nayar challenging amendments to the Representation of the People Act, 1951 that dispensed with the requirement of domicile for candidates contesting the Rajya Sabha elections.

The Bench said that the filling of the 58 vacancies in the Rajya Sabha was subject to the final outcome of the petition challenging the validity of the amendment. Mr. Muralidhar said the Commission would withhold for one or two days the announcement for one seat falling vacant due to the expulsion of a Rajya Sabha member in the wake of the `cash for query' scam, as the matter was coming up on March 3.
