Thiruvananthapuram: A godown containing pharmaceutical products in Tutors Lane, near the Secretariat, was gutted on Wednesday morning. None was injured in the accident. Twelve fire engines were rushed to the site to fight the blaze that lasted nearly two hours. The fire, which broke out 7 a.m., was first noticed by students of a computer school who alerted the Fire and Rescue department. The asbestos roofed building housing the godown and office of a pharmaceutical distribution firm was totally destroyed in the fire. A van, which was parked near the godown, was damaged when a concrete beam collapsed on it. The Fire and Rescue Services has started an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire. In a statement given to the Cantonment police, the owner of the firm said medicines valued at Rs.2 crores were destroyed in the fire. The police have launched a separate investigation into the incident. The fire caused much panic among local residents.
