This Day That Age
Pakistan will be formally declared "Islamic Republic of Pakistan" on March 23 and will continue to be within the Commonwealth even after becoming a Republic, according to resolutions circulated on March 1 by the Pakistan Constituent Assembly Secretariat. The first resolution says that Pakistan shall be declared a Republic on March 23, the day on which 16 years ago at Lahore the Pakistan Muslim League passed the Pakistan Resolution. This resolution is sponsored by the Central Interior Minister, Mr. A.K. Fazlul Huq, who had on March 23, 1940, moved the Pakistan Resolution at Lahore. According to a Karachi report, the Governor-General, Mr. Iskander Mirza, on March 2 gave his assent to the Pakistan Constitution Bill, adopted by the Constituent Assembly on February 29.
