This Day That Age
The Government hope to receive by the end of March the report of the committee now investigating into the "excessive overcrowding" during peak hours in the suburban railway services in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. This was stated in the Lok Sabha on March 1 by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Railway Minister, Mr. Shah Nawaz Khan, in reply to a question by Mr. T.B. Vittal Rao. The Parliamentary Secretary said that the Government would also consider the recommendation of the Estimates Committee that office hours in these cities be staggered in consultation with State Governments so that the peak period might be spread out.
