Staff Correspondent
Bidar: As many as 1,231 people in 26 villages of Bidar have been affected by leptospirosis or rat fever while "Chikun Gunya" has affected 46 persons. There have been no deaths, District Health and Family Welfare Officer S. Adiveppa said here on Thursday. Dr. Adiveppa said the highest number of cases have been reported in Aurad taluk (634 people) followed by 289 in Humnabad, 235 in Bhalki, 52 in Basavakalyan and 12 in Bidar. District Disease Surveillance Officer Ratikant Swamy and Malaria Control Officer Somnath Patil were present. "We are ready to face the situation and we are taking steps to contain the spread of the diseases," he said. The district administration has taken up a cleanliness campaign. Separate cells to combat communicable diseases have been opened in government hospitals and primary health centres.
Malaria
A team of experts will visit the district to study the incidence of malaria and to train officials in controlling mosquitoes, he said. Dr. Adiveppa said people should cover pots in which water is stored. Steps should be taken to ensure that water does not stagnate around the house.
