Congress-JD(S) Government accused of ignoring the tank

  • Congress-JD(S) Government accused of ignoring tank
  • Plan to construct railway station on tank bed criticised

HASSAN: G. Puttaswamy Gowda, former MP, has appealed to the district administration against "defacing" Hassan city in the name of improving infrastructure. It is equally important to protect the culture and environment of the city while providing basic amenities to people, he said.

Mr. Gowda said in a press release that it is imperative for the authorities concerned to take steps to conserve tanks. Regretting the breaching of the Channapatna tank a decade ago, which, he noted, played an important role in keeping Hassan city cool in summer, apart from charging the water table, Mr. Gowda said the city is facing a drinking water crisis owing to the breaching of the tank.

He said the previous Congress Government had prevailed upon the Union Government to sanction Rs. 6 crores to revive the tank. Despite availability of funds for the development of the tank, the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) Government failed to take up work, he said.

    Plan criticised

Criticising the plan of the Government to construct a railway station and bus stand on the tank bed, Mr. Gowda urged the authorities concerned to drop the idea. It is necessary to conserve the tank as it is a major source of drinking water to the city, he added. Mr. Gowda expressed dissatisfaction over the construction of the Government Medical College building on the Srichamarajendra Hospital premises in the heart of the city. He said the authorities concerned have demolished various buildings on the premises of hospital, which were constructed recently, to facilitate the construction of the college building.
