NEW DELHI: Heralding a new era in Indo-U.S. science and technology cooperation, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and U.S. President George Bush on Thursday announced the intention to establish a bi-national Science and Technology Endowment Fund and a joint Science and Technology Commission, with a view to accelerating cooperation in technical fields of mutual interests. The initiatives build on the S&T cooperation agreement signed between the two countries on October 17 last year. According to a fact sheet issued on the occasion, the income from the Fund would be used to support joint research and development projects in various disciplines selected through a competitive process.According to highly placed official sources, the Endowment Fund could have a corpus of over $50 million and could also be open for contributions from the private industry of the two countries. The details were now under discussion and would be finalised in about a month.
