Telecom industry hails verdict

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: "The entire telecom industry is relieved and delighted over the Supreme Court verdict that States cannot levy sales tax on services provided by telecom companies to consumers. The implication for the entire industry is as huge as Rs. 10,000 crore,'' said the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) Secretary General T. V. Ramachandran.

"The sales tax issue flies in the face of the Telecom Policy. This would have been double taxation on the consumers. They are already being charged service tax, which has been increased. Besides that, had the verdict gone against us BSNL would have had to pay about Rs. 5,000 crore and the private operators the remaining amount. Perhaps, we would have to pay ST on SIM cards as the Court has left the issue to the discretion of the assessment officers,'' he added.
