Gangjee shines on day one

Jakarta: Notwithstanding the lone bogey on the penultimate hole, Rahil Gangjee fired an impressive three-under 69 to finish tied 13th, highest among the Indians, after the first round of the $1 million Indonesia Open here on Thursday.

Korean Thongchai Jaidee with a brilliant six-under 66 reached the top slot, which he shares with Britain's Simon Dyson and Chinese Taipei's Wang Ter-chang.

The bogey on the penultimate hole at the Emeralda Golf Club was the only blot in an otherwise flawless round by Gangjee who began in style, with a hat-trick of birdies and then firing another on the fifth hole. Jyoti Randhawa had an erratic front nine even though he managed a one-under 71 for the tied 36th place, along with compatriot Gaurav Ghei.

Shiv Kapur shares the 56th place with, among others, Jeev Milkha Singh. Amandeep Johl, meanwhile, stuttered to a two-over 74 for the tied 104th place while Harmeet Kahlon's four-over 76 saw him languishing at the bottom, on the 130th spot. — UNI
