Deepan held, but retains lead

Sports Reporter

HYDERABAD: Former Asian junior champion Deepan Chakravarthy frittered away a winning advantage against Russian GM Alexander Fominyh in the seventh round to settle for a draw but still continued to be the sole leader with 6.5 points even as five others shared the second spot with six points each in the ONGC Cup International Grandmasters chess tournament at Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy indoor stadium here on Thursday.

In Catalan Opening, it looked as if Fominyh had an early advantage, but Deepan soon won a pawn and ensured that the game slipped into a rook and pawn ending. Just when things brightened for a Deepan win, the Indian player faltered by playing a2 instead of the Ra2, which only denied him a victory for after that, the final position was a theoretical draw.
